A move from the usual early January date to mid-December, certainly suited the Cornish athletes who were competing for County teams at the Annual South West Inter Counties and Club Championships, held at Bicton College, Devon.

A mass start of over 170 Senior Men in the combined Cornwall County Cross Country Championships and Frank Efford Sports Westward League was one of the biggest fields to compete at the Newquay Sports Centre but it hid a worrying decline in the numbers entering the Championship event after a few years of expanding numbers.

The annual trip to the National Inter Counties Cross Country Championships saw several changes to the course, including a fast down hill start to a tight bend leading to a couple of long, steep climbs before returning to the lower part of Cofton Park in Birmingham.
