Cornwall County Cross Country Championships 2015 - Report & Results
A mass start of over 170 Senior Men in the combined Cornwall County Cross Country Championships and Frank Efford Sports Westward League was one of the biggest fields to compete at the Newquay Sports Centre but it hid a worrying decline in the numbers entering the Championship event after a few years of expanding numbers.
Entries dropped below 200 and with the exception of the Under 17 Women, all races finished below last years numbers, the worst being the Under 11’s where only 24 boys and girls competed against a high of almost 80 in each race when this younger age group was first introduced as ‘development’ races.
Having said this, the quality was still there with some exciting races and some changes to the course this year which allowed spectators to watch all younger races within the Sports Centre fields, only the older races crossing the access lane into the adjacent Duchy owned fields. The heavy rain prior to the event and drizzle almost all day, meant that the course was extremely boggy in places and heavy going throughout.
The biggest winning margin of the day has to go to Under 15 Grace Brock (Cornwall AC), she romped home to victory well ahead of Newton Abbot’s Mollie Canham one of the top South West athletes last summer. Taking the silver medal and heading up a strong Newquay & Par group which took the team prize was Elowen Penfold. Rhianna Giles at 3rd and Olivia Carthew 4th completing the winning team
Under 17, Aidan Kent also had a clear victory after club mate, Frankie Aldred, who had been hot on his heels, pulled out following a fall on the course. With two more Newquay & Par athletes, Isaac Parker and Tom Luton taking the Silver and Bronze medals, the trio easily wrapped up the team Gold as well.
Newquay &Par won five of the six junior age group races, the Under 17 Women also in the Gold medal tally. After a frustrating summer through a foot injury, Sian Temple’s rehabilitation seems to be working as she steadily worked he way through the combined Seniors/Under 20/Under 17 athletes, only beaten by Cornwall AC’s Emma Steptoe who won both Senior and W45 Gold medals and Tess Masselink (Callington) who was the Gold medalist for the Under 20 age group. Lily England (3rd) and Shannon Beckerleg (5th) completed the team. Katie Hughes (Cornwall AC) ran strongly for the Silver medal.
Steptoe headed up the first of two Senior team Victories for Cornwall AC, she also looked to be back to her best with Amy Sole taking the Silver medal and Donna Raggett the Bronze. There were four to score in the Men’s race which was dominated in the Westward League event by Bideford, one of whom, Mark Jenkin, was eligible to compete in the Cornwall Championships and duly won the Senior Gold medal. Penzance athlete, Peter Le Grice, competing for his Bristol & West club took the Silver medal with Tony Brewer (Mile High) picking up the Bronze. Cornwall AC’s squad of Callum Jones (4th), Paul Whear (5th and winner of the M45 category), Paul Smith (8th) and Chris Harry (9th and winner of M50) took the team Championship Gold
Other veteran category winners were: Female - W40 Debbie Starkey (St Austell Running Club), W35 Jo Herd (Newquay Road Runners) W50 Sharron Coyne (Newquay Road Runners) and W55 Lesley Richardson (Newquay Road Runners); Male – M40 Ken Walker (Newquay Road Runners), M55 Martin Exley-Deane (Tavistock AC) & M65 Paul Wright (Newquay Road Runners). Under 20’s in the Senior races were: Male – 1 Ben Hicks (Mounts Bay H) 2 Samuel Lane De Courtin (Newquay & Par), 3 Matt Robinson (Cornwall AC); Female - 1 Tess Masselink (Callington), 2 Isabel Steele (Cornwall AC) and 3 Lowenna Hawkey (Newquay Road Runners).
There was a close race between Under 15 Truro School training partners Finn Birnie and Harris Mier with little to separate them until the final section where Birnie put daylight between them to claim the victory. James Greenwood (Newquay & Par) won the Bronze medal with Truro School taking the team Gold through Alexander McCartney at 5th.
The day started with the Under 13 Girls, Charlotte Hicks (East Cornwall H) made light work of the heavy conditions over the 3Km course crossing the line well clear of Silver medallist Tia Brown and Bronze medallist, Jessica Spry, both from Newquay & Par. Sydney Godwin (6th) completed the winning team.
Bradley McLellan (Newquay & Par) was the favourite to win the Under 13 Boys race and even though club mate, Si-am Juntakereket gave him a good chase throughout the race, he knew he would settle for Silver equally clear of Oliver Hutchinson (Penair School) for Bronze. Samuel Knobloch (10th) helped McLellean & Juntakereket to the team victory.
